Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive, Val Gokenbach, R.N., D.M., has been appointed to the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on the Magnet Recognition Program®.

As a commissioner, she will serve a four-year term that began July 1, 2010. She is responsible for the governance of Magnet Recognition Program® activities, including approving program criteria, designating Magnet credentials and evaluating the program’s strategic direction.

The Magnet Recognition Program® was created in 1994 to bestow national recognition on health care organizations that demonstrate14 attributes or “forces of magnetism” that exemplify excellence in nursing.

Gokenbach has held administrative health care positions for more than 30 years. Her leadership responsibilities have included management of nursing and other support departments such as radiology, respiratory therapy, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, oncology services, neurodiagnostic services, employee health, schools of allied health, patient service departments and emergency services.

Her greatest accomplishment at Beaumont, according to Gokenbach, is receiving Magnet accreditation in 2004.

“ANCC greatly appreciates Val Gokenbach and Beaumont for her service to the Commission on Magnet. Her experience and expertise will be a terrific asset to the Magnet community,” says Karen Drenkard, Ph.D., RN, director of the Magnet Recognition Program.

Magnet hospitals have better patient outcomes and offer an environment where nursing professionalism is encouraged and where there is a strong commitment to teamwork, to continuing education and to improving standards for patient care. Magnet hospitals demonstrate excellence in the management, philosophy and practice of nursing; adhere to national standards to improve patient care quality; and understand and respect the cultural and ethnic diversity of patients, their families and other health care providers.

A critical component of Magnet recognition is shared leadership for nursing professionalism. This is exemplified at Beaumont by the Professional Nurse Councils at all three Beaumont hospitals that are made up of nurses who serve in an advisory and decision-making role to provide leadership in nursing practice, professional development, outcomes and research.

Beaumont’s 1,061-bed hospital in Royal Oak is a major academic, research and referral center with Level I trauma designation. It was named Michigan’s first Magnet-designated hospital for nursing excellence and is an associate member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related institutions. Beaumont, Royal Oak has been named the “most preferred hospital” in a five-county area for 14 consecutive years in a consumer survey by National Research Corporation. The hospital is also named in six medical specialties on U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals” 2010 list.

Beaumont Hospital, Troy is also a Magnet-designated hospital. Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe is working towards Magnet designation.

The Southeastern Michigan Health Association has been awarded one of two major award initiatives from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to participate in the national Beacon Community Cooperative Agreement Program. National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, David Blumenthal, M.D., of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, made the announcement this morning at the headquarters of Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

The Beacon program is one of several new programs created by the Health Information Technology Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The Beacon Communities program will use health IT resources within their community as a foundation for bringing doctors, hospitals, community health programs, federal programs and patients together to design new ways of improving quality and efficiency to benefit patients and taxpayers. Each Beacon Community selects specific and measurable improvement goals in each of three vital areas for health systems improvement: quality, cost-efficiency, and population health. The goals vary according to the needs and priorities of each community.

The $16.2 million award will be used to create the Southeast Michigan Beacon Community Collaborative, which will leverage existing and additional technologies across health care settings to improve information sharing, continuity of care and improve the quality and safety of care for underserved patients with chronic diabetes in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, Mich. According to SEMBCC, diabetes has a very high prevalence among this target population, 12.8 percent of adults, or 93,000 people.

The Southeast Michigan Beacon Community Collaborative is a diverse 60-member multi-stakeholder consortium led by the Southeast Michigan Health Information Exchange. “By decreasing costs and improving the quality of care, a self-sustaining health information exchange serving southeast Michigan will be achieved,” said SEMHIE Chairman Robert Jackson, M.D., an Allen Park family practice physician.

“This award will help achieve measurable improvements in health care quality, safety and efficiency while advancing the development of the health IT infrastructure in Southeast Michigan” said Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. “The Southeast Michigan Beacon Community Collaborative receiving this award is a testimony to the quality and dedication of the region’s health care providers.”

“The Southeastern Michigan Health Association will be part of an impressive group of Beacon communities throughout the nation to create unique and lasting health IT programs that will materially impact the wellbeing of the entire community,” said Dr. Blumenthal, national coordinator for Health Information Technology. “We look forward to taking the lessons learned in Detroit and sharing this valuable information with other communities to show positive changes in health care through the use of health IT.”

The initiative will link primary care providers and hospital emergency rooms, to improve patient self-management of diabetes, reduce avoidable hospitalizations and emergency room use. A network of patient navigators will be established, providing access to the patients’ health histories and provide an online tracking system to manage patient care. In 2006, diabetes was the 6th leading cause of death in Michigan; 2009 data indicates diabetes in 23 percent of all Detroit hospital discharges.

Work will begin this fall on the three-year program.

About Southeast Michigan Beacon Community Collaborative
SEMBCC membership includes six major health systems (Beaumont Hospitals, Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health System, Oakwood Healthcare System, St. John Providence Health System and Trinity Health), payers, employers, physicians and other health care providers, quality organizations, safety-net providers and health care professional associations.

The new location is the Henry Ford Medical Center-Columbus, located at 39450

W. 12 Mile Road at Haggerty in Novi. Patients are seen from 3-5 p.m. Thursdays. To make an appointment, call 313.972.4216 or visit www.henryford.com/concussions.

Henry Ford’s sports concussion clinic uses a multidisciplinary team approach for treating a concussion. An estimated 3 million concussions occur every year in the United States, and nearly 9 percent of all high school athletic injuries are concussions, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

The concussion clinic care team includes a primary care sports medicine specialist, a neuropsychologist and a certified athletic trainer who work together to determine the proper treatment plan after a concussion.

“This specialized clinic is for athletes who suffer a concussion, regardless of their level of competition,” says Kenneth Podell, Ph.D., director of the Division of Neuropsychology and

clinic co-director. Dr. Podell is a consultant for the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings and Major League Baseball.

“Our goal is to return these athletes to competition as quickly and safely as possible.”

Henry Ford opened its first concussion clinic in April at its William Clay Ford Center for Athletic Medicine, 6526 Second Avenue in Detroit. Patients are seen from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesdays.

Concussions are caused by a fall, bump or blow to the head or body during contact sports, and can happen even if the athlete does not lose consciousness.

Henry Ford’s team approach allows the athlete to be evaluated and receive an individual treatment plan during one convenient visit. The team utilizes computer technology to make a precise diagnosis by allowing physicians to analyze the patient’s memory, reaction time, symptoms and other crucial brain functions to determine how the brain has been affected by injury.

“A treatment plan is then created that lays out a step-by-step approach to that ultimate goal of having the athlete return safely to play,” says Brett Martin, D.O., primary care sports medicine specialist and a clinic co-director. “Returning to play too soon can put the athlete at high risk for long-term problems should a secondary injury occur.”

Treatment plans may include neurological consultation, neuro-imaging, physical therapy and/or medication, as well as a customized home program of exercises and stretches.

1921-2010
A pioneer for African American physicians and patients

Waldo Cain, M.D., a long time Detroit physician and an early advocate of equal access for African American physicians and patients, passed away last Saturday. He was 88 years old.

Dr. Cain, a surgeon, attained a staff appointment in the mid 1950s at Grace Hospital, today merged as Sinai-Grace. Dr. Cain joined several other African American physicians already at Grace. Together through the 1950s-60s they advocated for equal access to other Detroit medical facilities for African American physicians and patients.

History will remember Dr. Cain as a gifted surgeon and a civil rights pioneer in Detroit’s medical community. A graduate of Northern High School, Dr. Cain completed pre-med training at Wayne and earned his M.D. with honors from Meharry Medical College, in 1945. He retired in 2000.

Dr. Cain had appointments in the departments of surgery at several DMC hospitals including Harper, Grace, Hutzel, and Children’s.

He was a former clinical professor of surgery at Wayne State University and received several teaching awards and honors from the school. In 2001, the WSU Department of Surgery established the Annual Waldo Cain Award for Academic Excellence.

His survivors include his widow Dr. Natalia Tanner-Cain, a pediatrician affiliated with Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

A celebration of life will be observed Saturday Aug. 28, at Plymouth United Church of Christ, 600 E. Warren, Detroit. Family hour begins at 10 a.m., followed by a religious service at noon.

—–

Waldo L. Cain, M.D, FACS, was the twelfth child of James Lawson Cain and Evelyn Croft Cain, born September 28, 1921, in E. Gaston, Alabama. He was the seventh son of a seventh son.

Dr. Cain has fond memories of an ideal childhood on his father’s farm in Alabama. During his childhood, he experienced sharing and learned discipline. He looked at his father as a role model. He remembered his father’s words, “Whatever you get, you have to work for it”.

Dr. Cain migrated to Detroit at the age of 13 years old to live with older brothers and sisters. After graduating from Northern High School, he completed the pre-med training at Wayne University. During these years he was active in athletics, including track and tennis. He was accepted to Meharry Medical College, and received his M.D degree in 1945 with honors. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and Kappa Pi medical honor society. As a surgical resident, he was trained by the great Dr. Matthew Walker. As a testimony to his surgical talents, in 1963 when Dr. Walker needed surgery, Dr. Cain was the one to perform the surgery.

He returned to Detroit in 1953 and was called to serve his country in the armed services and availed himself of opportunities to open doors. He was in the army for two years, where he was a captain and vice chief of surgery. In 1955, he returned from service and answered a different calling, choosing the course of pioneers, advocates, and champions of rights over injustice. He was a major player in the breaking down of racial barriers in the provision of quality health care for all Detroiters.

Dr. Cain had appointments in the department of surgery at Harper, Grace, Hutzel, Children’s, and Detroit Riverview Hospitals. He was a past president of the Detroit Medical Society and received their Physician of the Year Award. Waldo Cain was clinical professor of surgery at Wayne State University. In 1984, he was the recipient of the Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching of Residents.

Wayne State University Department of Surgery 1989- The first recipient of the Theodore McGraw Clinical Faculty Teaching Award. Wayne State University Department of Surgery 1996- Recipient of the McGraw Clinical Faculty Teaching Award. 1991- Senior Faculty Award Wayne State University Black Student Class of 1991.

In 2002, Dr. Cain was the recipient of the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Pathfinders Award in Medicine. His commitments to civic activities were acknowledged by the following: Founding Member of the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner. He was the first black and only non lawyer to serve on the Commission. He was the recipient of the 1996 Urban League Distinguished Warriors Award.

Dr. Cain joined Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity as an undergraduate student at Wayne State University. He was a founding member of Rogues Social Club, Iota Chapter of Sigma Pi Phi (The Boule) and the Detroit Chapter of the Guardsmen Inc.

Golf was his favorite recreational activity and he was a member of the Nomads Golf Association, Wabeek Country Club, and the Duffer Golf Club. He was twice the national champion for the Nomads Golf Club.

Dr. Cain held memberships in the Wayne County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society, Nation Medical Society, and was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
